5 Reasons Your Permanent Makeup Brows Fade

Why do some eyebrow tattoos last a decade while others fade within just a couple of years? It can feel unpredictable, but there’s always more going on beneath the surface than most people realize. Every person’s brows fade differently, and that is completely normal.

How Long Does Permanent Makeup Last?

There is no exact expiration date for permanent makeup. Some people may be ready for a colour boost after a couple of years, while others still have visible pigment after five, seven, or even 10 years.

This does not necessarily mean one set of brows was done better than another. Permanent makeup results can vary significantly from person to person because the pigment is placed in living skin. Your skin changes, heals, and responds differently than anyone else’s.

Several factors influence how quickly your brows fade and how the colour changes over time.

1. Your Skin Type

Skin type is one of the biggest factors in pigment retention. Oily skin tends to break down and release pigment faster than dry or balanced skin. Oil production can also make healed strokes or shading appear softer over time. This is one reason why a technique that looks beautiful on one person may not be the best option for another.

Someone with oily or porous skin may get better long-term results from powder brows rather than fine microbladed strokes. That does not mean oily skin cannot hold permanent makeup. It simply means the technique, pigment choice, and expectations may need to be adjusted.

2. Your Immune System

Permanent makeup pigment is a foreign substance, so your immune system naturally works to break it down and remove it. This process happens gradually, but the speed can vary. Some people metabolize pigment faster than others. Two people can receive the same technique and follow the same aftercare instructions, but one may retain more colour because of how their body responds.

Your immune system is doing its job, even if it has terrible timing when you really love your brows.

3. Your Lifestyle

UV exposure can cause permanent makeup to fade faster by breaking down pigment particles in the skin. Frequent tanning, outdoor activities, and skipping sunscreen may all affect how long your brows remain visible.

Once your brows are fully healed, applying sunscreen to the area can help protect the pigment. Wearing a hat when spending extended time outdoors can provide additional protection.

Some skincare products and treatments may also speed up fading, especially when used directly over the brows. Retinoids, exfoliating acids, chemical peels, and certain laser treatments encourage skin renewal or target pigment. Always tell your skincare provider or laser technician that you have permanent makeup before receiving treatment near the area.

4. Technique and Implantation Depth

How the pigment is implanted also influences how it heals and ages. If it is placed too shallowly, the colour may fade quickly or heal unevenly. If it is placed too deeply, it may look blurry, appear too dark, or change colour over time.

The goal is to place the pigment at the correct depth for permanent makeup. This requires training, experience, and an understanding of different skin types.

Technique also matters. Microblading, nano brows, combination brows, and powder brows do not all heal or fade in exactly the same way. Brittany considers your skin, natural brow hair, and desired result when recommending a technique.

5. The Type of Pigment Used

Pigment formulation can affect how long the colour remains visible and how it changes as it fades. Different pigment bases, colour blends, and formulations behave differently in the skin.

Modern permanent makeup is often designed to soften gradually rather than remain unchanged forever. This allows your brows to be refreshed or adjusted as your facial features, hair colour, and personal style evolve.

After all, the brow shape you loved 10 years ago may not be the shape you would choose today. Brows have survived some very enthusiastic trends.
