Grey Brow Tattoos Explained
If eyebrow tattoos have turned grey, blue-grey, or ashy, it can be confusing to understand what happened. In most cases, there isn’t a single cause—several factors can influence how permanent makeup heals and fades over time. The good news is that modern pigments and techniques have greatly improved how PMU brows age.
Why Do Eyebrow Tattoos Turn Grey?
One of the main reasons eyebrow tattoos turn grey is the type of pigment used. Years ago, iron oxide-based pigments could heal or fade with unwanted red or warm tones. Manufacturers began adding organic, carbon-based formulas, some with high levels of carbon black.
Carbon can create a strong, crisp result when it is first implanted. However, as the other colours in the pigment break down, the carbon may remain more visible. This can leave the brows looking grey, blue-grey, or darker and ashier than originally intended.
This does not necessarily mean anything was done incorrectly. In many cases, grey brows reflect the pigment products, training, and industry knowledge available at the time. Permanent makeup has evolved, and there is now a much deeper understanding of pigment chemistry and how different formulas age in the skin.
How Pigment Depth Can Affect the Colour
The depth at which pigment is implanted can also influence how it looks over time. When pigment is placed too deeply, the layers of skin above it filter and scatter the light. This can make the colour appear cooler or more bluish, even if the original pigment was brown.
Proper depth is one of the reasons choosing an experienced permanent makeup artist matters. The goal is to implant pigment at a level where it can heal clearly and fade gradually without creating unnecessary trauma to the skin.
Other Reasons Brow Tattoos Can Change Colour
Pigment and depth are two of the biggest factors, but they are not the only ones. The way permanent makeup changes varies from person to person and may also be affected by:
Natural skin tone and undertone
Oily or dry skin
Individual healing and immune response
Sun exposure
Exfoliating acids, retinoids, and other active skincare products
The body’s natural breakdown of pigment
Because so many factors are involved, two people can receive similar brow treatments and experience different fading patterns. All permanent makeup will soften and change to some degree. The goal is not to prevent fading altogether. In fact, fading is expected so that brows can be adjusted as features, preferences, and natural brow hair change over time.
Why Modern Permanent Makeup Fades Differently
Today’s artists have access to more advanced pigment lines, better colour theory education, and a stronger understanding of how pigment behaves in different skin types.
At Beauty By B, we use OMG pigments from Girlz Ink, which contain little to no carbon, and Tina Davies Fade pigments. These formulas contain particles that have been micronized or milled down to help the components fade at a more even rate in the skin.
No pigment can guarantee that colour will remain exactly the same forever. Skin is living tissue, and many personal and environmental factors influence the result. However, choosing pigments intentionally allows for soft, realistic results with a more predictable, natural-looking fade.

Can Grey Eyebrow Tattoos Be Corrected?
Grey brows can often be improved, but the right treatment depends on the existing pigment. Before recommending a correction, the colour, depth, shape, saturation, and skin condition are all assessed.
Possible options may include:
Colour correction to add warmth and rebalance an ashy tone
Lightening or removal when the pigment is too dark or saturated
A carefully planned brow refresh
Removal followed by new permanent makeup once the skin is ready
It is not always possible to simply cover old pigment with a new colour. Adding more pigment to heavily saturated brows can make them look darker and less natural. A consultation allows for a full assessment of what is currently in the skin and the most appropriate long-term approach.
The Next Step for Your Brows
Grey brows don’t mean you’re stuck with them, and they don’t mean you’ve run out of options. They simply mean your brows need a more thoughtful, tailored approach moving forward.
If you’re considering correction or removal, book a personalised consultation. We will assess your existing brows, answer your questions, and help you understand what’s realistically possible for your skin.
Consultations are available at Beauty By B in Calgary.
