What Really Are Nano Brows? What You Should Know Before Booking

Nano brows are one of the most commonly used phrases in permanent makeup right now, but they’re also one of the most misunderstood. Not everything labeled “nano brows” is technically nano, and that’s where the confusion starts.

What Are Nano Brows?

Nano brows are a permanent makeup technique that uses a machine and a very fine needle to create soft, hair-like strokes in the brow. The goal is to mimic the look of natural brow hairs while enhancing shape, fullness, and definition.

Compared to microblading, which uses a manual blade, nano brows may be less traumatic to the skin when done properly.

What Makes a Needle Nano?

Nano refers to the size of the needle used during the procedure. A true nano brow should be created with a needle diameter 0.20 or under.

This smaller needle allows for more precise, delicate strokes and a softer overall result once healed. When performed with the right technique and needle selection, it may also be gentler on the skin.

Why Nano Brows Don’t Always Mean Nano

Many artists use slightly larger needles, such as 0.25 or 0.30, to create similar hair-like strokes with a machine. Technically, these would be considered machine hairstrokes, not true nano brows.

However, the term nano brows is often used across the industry because it is familiar to clients and commonly searched online. It has also become associated with the idea of a softer, more natural result.

A lot of ‘nano brows’ aren’t actually done with true nano needles. Those super thin needles implant very little pigment, which can make retention unpredictable. Many artists choose a slightly different needle to get cleaner, longer-lasting results, without compromising the look.

Are Nano Brows Better Than Microblading?

For many clients, nano brows are a preferred alternative to microblading. Because the technique uses a machine rather than a manual blade, it often causes less disruption to the skin. This can make nano brows a better option for certain skin types. However both techniques when done properly can produce soft, natural results with minimal trauma to the skin.
